- Lecture
- "Matemagia: trucos con los números y otros entresijos matemáticos" [Mathmagic: tricks with numbers and other mathematical mysteries] , by Fernando Blasco (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid), on Tuesday 6th November, at 12:30 h.
-
Summary: Magic show full of fun and surprises based on numbers and their properties.
-
Description:: Fernando Blasco, a professor at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, is a mathematician and magician and an expert in the popularization of science. He will perform magic tricks full of entertaining curiosities based on the combination of magic and mathematics. The principles of geometry, arithmetic and probabilities will be attractively explained using knots, playing cards, dice, dice-boxes and numerical tricks.

-
Summary: Art through the lenses of a mathematician’s spectacles.
-
Description: This talk will consist of the relation between art and mathematics, showing how this relation is much deeper and more fruitful that what it might at first appear. As products of the human mind, mathematical ideas and art have followed historically parallel paths. The concepts of time, space and measurement, which are the object of study in mathematics are also at the root of artistic creation. Francisco Martín Casalderrey will show us how to look at art with the eyes of a mathematician, providing the audience with an added value and helping them to perceive what they see in a different way.

- Lecture
- "El legado de Alan Turing", by Manuel de León (Instituto de Ciencias Matemáticas), on Thursday 15th November, at 19:00 h.
-
Description: In the context of the Alan Turing International Year, Manuel de León, director and researcher at the Instituto de Ciencias Matemáticas (ICMAT), will give a talk on this brilliant mathematician, famous for being the father of computation. The British mathematician, Alan Mathison Turing, is one of the most extraordinary figures of the 20th century. His work was decisive for many scientific disciplines: he is regarded as one of the founding fathers of the science of computation, having developed the concept of the Turing machine; he performed ground-breaking work in cryptography and helped to decrypt the Nazi codes generated by the Enigma machine, he is also regarded as one of the founders of artificial intelligence; he is the author of the mathematical model of morphogenesis and also made interesting contributions to numerical linear algebra. This year we are celebrating the centenary of his birth, which has been declared the Turing Year, and with this talk we wish to pay tribute to his memory with a brief review of his life and work, a wonderful legacy for humanity.
