Alan Reid, along with Martin Bridson, is co-director of one of the new Severo Ochoa Laboratories programme. The Scottish mathematician has been a professor and has been the chair –since 2018– of the Department of Mathematics at Rice University (USA). In addition to his contributions to low-dimensional topology, Reid has achieved influential results in hyperbolic manifolds and geometric group theory.

Numerical sequences that hold mysteries of the universe and mathematics
Motohico Mulase is an expert in integrable systems, complex algebraic geometry, complex analysis, mathematical physics and differential geometry. Image: Mulase.
Motohico Mulase (University of California Davis (USA)) was the speaker at the ICMAT-UAM-UCM-UC3M Joint Colloquium on 11 October 2024. His talk, ‘Miraculous Integer Sequences’, explored two fascinating sequences of integers: that of Catalan numbers and that of Gromov-Witten invariants of genus 0 of a certain algebraic variety. In them, there are connections with cosmology, quantum physics and the mysterious Riemann zeta function. The event can be watched online on the following link.
Before his lecture, he presented some insights into this exciting field of research in this article.
Young researchers take centre stage at the first meeting of SOMMa centres and units in mathematics

The Math SOMMa Junior Meeting was held at the Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM) from 2 to 4 October 2024. This was a forum dedicated to researchers in the early stages of their careers, both predoctoral and postdoctoral, promoted by the mathematics research institutions recognised with the Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu awards: ICMAT, BCAM, IMAG, CIMNE and the CRM. The programme included five plenary sessions given by scientists from these institutions (José Manuel Conde spoke on behalf of the ICMAT). In addition, there was a wide range of talks on various current research topics, a poster session and a series of complementary activities.
Two days dedicated to group theory

On 17 and 18 October 2024 the ICMAT hosted the eighth edition of the Groups in Madrid conference, devoted to recent developments in the field of group theory. On this occasion, the meeting dealt with new results and open problems on hyperbolic Coxeter groups, fast generation of algebraic structures, algebraic varieties on free groups, homotopy groups, generating sets in finite groups or binary actions of almost simple groups.

On 11 October 2024, the sixth edition of the steMatEsElla programme was launched in an event that took place at ICMAT. This event was also the closing of the previous edition. The aim of this initiative is to ‘encourage and support the academic and professional growth of women in the field of mathematics and other STEM disciplines’, through the mentoring of women students, both undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students, by established professionals in these areas. steMatEsElla is organised by the Spanish Royal Mathematical Society (RSME) and the Spanish Association of Executives and Consultants (EJE&CON), with the collaboration of ICMAT, Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM) and Ackermann International.

Mallorca brought together nearly 70 Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu centres and units of excellence in the 8th edition of 100xScience
From 9 to 11 October 2024, 100xCiencia was held in Palma de Mallorca, an annual event that brings together representatives of the 68 centres and units accredited with the Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu seal of excellence, including ICMAT. The main objective of this event is to forge interdisciplinary collaborations and exchange experiences. The programme included both activities open to the general public and those restricted to the SOMMa community (Alliance of Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu centres and units).

ICMAT is offering a postdoctoral position for researchers in Geometric Group Theory with an outstanding academic record, who are interested in pursuing their research career at the Bridson-Reid Laboratory at ICMAT. The position is for a duration of 2 years, with a start date after September 1, 2025. Shortlisted candidates may be invited for individual interviews in due course.
Deadline: 30/12/2024
ICMAT Postdoc SO 2024 – Analysis and PDEs. ICMAT is offering a postdoctoral position for outstanding researchers in Mathematics in the area of Analysis and PDEs who wish to further their careers at ICMAT. Candidates should have a strong background in fields related to Partial Differential Equations, with a particular emphasis on fluid dynamics. The primary focus of this position is to rigorously address fundamental questions concerning the existence, uniqueness, stability, and long-time behavior of the Navier-Stokes and Euler equations for incompressible fluids, as well as related mathematical models. The duration of the contract will be 2 years with a starting date after September 1, 2025. Preselected applicants could be interviewed individually in due course.
