Every Friday during the school year, ICMAT becomes the meeting point for more than 150 young people aged between 12 and 18 interested in mathematics. The third edition of the Pequeño Instituto de Matemáticas (Little Institute of Mathematics, PIM), which began on Friday, 20 September, with more participants than ever, will bring students closer to original and challenging mathematics. To do this, they work in groups to solve complex problems, following the model of mathematical circles, with the help of professionals in mathematical research. ‘We want to inspire the next generation of creative minds passionate about mathematics,’ say the organisers.

ERCOM, the committee of the European Mathematical Society (EMS) made up of Europe’s leading mathematics centres, has just renewed its leadership team. Christophe Ritzenhaler, professor at the University of Rennes 1 (France) and director of the Centre International de Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées (France), has been elected as president. Javier Aramayona, director of the ICMAT, is the new vice-president. ‘It is an honour to be appointed as vice-president of this committee, which coordinates the most important mathematics research centres in Europe,’ says Aramayona. ‘From this point of view, it plays an important role in European mathematics: it increases the level of scientific and management cohesion between its centres,’ he adds.

Geometry describing the properties of materials

From 21 to 23 August, the Workshop on Geometrical Aspects of Material Modelling was held in the Sala de Grados of the Faculty of Education of the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED). ‘It is an interdisciplinary meeting that combines differential geometry, the mechanics of deformable solids and the physics of materials to study how to describe and predict the behaviour of materials based on their geometric structure,’ said the organisers, including Manuel de León, research professor at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) at ICMAT.

Mathematician José Seade Kuri (National Autonomous University of Mexico, UNAM) is recognised in the Latin American scientific community not only for his academic career, but also for his involvement in institutional and educational issues. His extensive career and influence in Mexican and Latin American mathematics have earned him the Latin American Mathematics Research Prize 2024, in the category of Latin American Mathematical Leadership, in its first edition. The prize was awarded by Institute of the Mathematical Sciences of the Americas (IMSA), with which ICMAT collaborates. The award ceremony took place within the framework of the Mathematical Waves Miami conference series, held at the beginning of the year at the University of Miami (USA).
