The new ICMAT program, "Enhancing mathematical bridges between Spain and Latin America," is already underway. It's a research platform aimed at facilitating knowledge exchange among researchers from Spain and Latin America, supporting and fostering the development of new generations. Leading the initiative are ICMAT and the Institute of the Mathematical Sciences of the Americas (IMSA) at the University of Miami.

The program was officially launched on 24 April with a presentation event held at ICMAT. Speakers included José María Martell, Vice President of Scientific and Technical Research at CSIC; Javier Aramayona, Director of ICMAT; Ludmil Katzarkov, Director of IMSA (University of Miami); and Yuri Tschinkel, Director of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the Simons Foundation.

One of the initial actions is an exchange program set to begin in 2025. This program will allow researchers from Latin America to visit ICMAT and facilitate participation of young researchers from the region in ICMAT's training programs, both doctoral and postdoctoral. Additionally, conferences and congresses will be organized in collaboration with IMSA.

This is one of the new initiatives that ICMAT is launching thanks to its recent achievement, for the fourth time, of accreditation as a "Severo Ochoa" Center of Excellence, awarded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities.

Joan Bagaria, an ICREA research professor at the Universitat de Barcelona (UB) and a specialist in mathematical logic and set theory, was the speaker at the mathematics colloquium, jointly organized by ICMAT and the universities Autónoma de Madrid, Complutense de Madrid, and Carlos III de Madrid. It took place on 15 April, at the Degree Hall of the Padre Soler Building on the Leganés Campus of Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. The recording of the event is available at this link.

In his talk, titled "The Higher Infinite and its Role in Mathematics," Bagaria focused on those large cardinal infinities whose existence cannot be proven within the standard ZFC (Zermelo-Fraenkel with Choice) axiomatic system of set theory. The researcher presented some examples of large cardinals and explained some of their applications to other areas of mathematics, where they have been particularly important in solving prominent open problems.

The ICMAT hosts a thematic program dedicated to functional analysis

From 1 April to 15 June, the ICMAT is hosting "Lattice Structures in Analysis and Applications," a research program that includes three minicourses, three thematic weeks, a workshop, and seminars focused on so-called Banach lattices. This object was born with the purpose of understanding the structure of function spaces, taking into account that they are ordered spaces, a fundamental aspect of many classical function spaces.
Reading group to understand the latest advancements in large language models

From 9 April to 14 May, “Introducing Large Language Models” is taking place, a reading group focusing on large language models (LLMs), the foundation of generative text artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT. The five sessions, led by various specialists, will serve as a forum to comprehend the latest advancements within LLMs. These sessions take place alternately at the ICMAT and CUNEF University venues, the organizing institutions.
