In mid-November 2023, Javier Aramayona (Madrid, 1978), científico titular of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) at the Instituto de Ciencias Matemáticas (ICMAT), was appointed director of the ICMAT. Aramayona highlights, among his purposes as director, "to consolidate the ICMAT's position as a benchmark in excellent mathematical research and deepen the Institute's identity as a collaborative environment."

The CSIC has created the Margarita Salas Medal to recognize the work in research supervision. Diego Córdoba, profesor de investigación of the CSIC at the ICMAT and scientific director of the institute's Severo Ochoa programme, is among the eight winners of this first edition.
Alberto Enciso, new corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Sciences

Last November, the Royal Academy of Sciences appointed Alberto Enciso, profesor de investigación of the CSIC at the ICMAT, as corresponding member. Along with him, eight other corresponding members recently joined the institution, including the mathematicians Xavier Ros Oton and Verónica Bolón. On 1st February at 6:30 p.m., Enciso will give his inaugural conference entitled "Interaction between analysis and geometry in the study of incompressible fluids" at the Academy.
Niky Kamran gave a ICMAT-UAM-UC3M-UCM Joint Colloquium on the Calderón problem

Niky Kamran is James McGill Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at McGill University in Montreal (Canada). He has recently made important contributions to a notorius problem in geometric analysis: the Calderón problem. On 14th December, Kamran visited the ICMAT to give a Joint Colloquium of ICMAT-Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) – Carlos III University of Madrid (UC3M) – Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) on this topic.
- If you missed it, here is the link to the video of the colloquium.
- In addition, we did an interview with him where he told us things like this:
"A better understanding of the operators that do not satisfy Hormander's unique continuation principle could be key in order to make further progress on the Calderón problem."
2023: four thematic research programmes at the ICMAT

This year the institute hosts four programmes –each one including conferences, and other activities– dedicated to various research topics:
Two new researchers at the ICMAT
In December 2022, the following two people have joined the Institute:
- Miguel Martínez González (ICMAT-CSIC) has started his thesis, which he will develop under the supervision of Ángel Castro (ICMAT-CSIC).
- Henrique A. Mendes Da Silva (ICMAT-UAM) has joined as a predoctoral researcher under the supervision of Andrei Jaikin (ICMAT-UAM).
Francisco González Doña and Alberto Ruiz de Alarcón, new ICMAT doctors
In January, two ICMAT researchers defended their theses. Congratulations!
