The “Severo Ochoa” Centers of Excellence and “María de Maeztu” Units of Excellence program, funded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities, aims to strengthen the institutional capacities of outstanding research centers and units. Targeted at entities distinguished by their internationally recognized scientific leadership, the program supports institutions capable of advancing the frontiers of knowledge, generating high-impact results, and serving as key drivers within the Spanish Science, Technology, and Innovation System.

Within this framework, the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (ICMAT) has been recognized (CEX-2023-001347-S) for the fourth consecutive time as a “Severo Ochoa” Center of Excellence by the State Research Agency (AEI). This recognition, which ICMAT has continuously received since the program’s inception in 2011, establishes it as a leading institution in mathematical research in Spain and places it on par with the best European institutes. The program’s scientific director, Diego Córdoba, a CSIC research professor and recipient of the 2023 National Research Award, also led the institute’s success in the two previous rounds of the award.

Since its foundation in 2007, ICMAT has consistently upheld a commitment to excellence, driven by the remarkable scientific contributions of its researchers across various fields of mathematics. Its status as a mixed center—integrated by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and three Madrid-based universities (the Autonomous University of Madrid, Complutense University of Madrid, and Carlos III University of Madrid) has established it as a premier hub for mathematical activity in the Madrid region. This collective effort has been significantly bolstered by Severo Ochoa funding, enhancing its leadership at both regional and international levels.

The recent accreditation not only acknowledges ICMAT’s scientific achievements but also creates new opportunities to advance innovative projects. With €4.5 million in funding secured until 2028, the Institute will strengthen its institutional structure. Additionally, €1.6 million will be allocated to the training of research personnel, reinforcing ICMAT’s commitment to nurturing new talent.

Among the projects set to benefit from this funding are the Severo Ochoa Laboratories, led by internationally renowned researchers and serving as a cornerstone of the center’s scientific excellence.

This new phase will enable ICMAT to continue driving cutting-edge research, producing high-impact results, and solidifying its position as a global leader in the field of mathematics.
